Tour to Cenotes:
On the Yucatan Peninsula there are no above-ground rivers but a huge network of underground rivers that are accessible through hidden entrances via cenotes.
With a total length of over 1000 km, it is the largest contiguous underwater cave system on earth. The dissolution of the limestone forms caves and underground watercourses.
If the ceiling of such a cave collapses, a day opening is created which the Maya called the entrances to the underworld (xibalba
“place of fear”) and also used as religious sacrificial sites.
There are open, wet, dry and closed cenotes. The fresh water of the cenotes is not only an important habitat for many living things in the jungle but also necessary for the human population then and now.
According to official data from the Mexican Environment Agency, there are more than 6,000, most of
which have not yet been developed.

In the freshwater cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula, strict attention is paid to the water quality, because some of this water is still drunk.
The chemicals used in traditional sunscreen destroy corals and are harmful to marine life. Therefore, sun protection is no longer allowed in Mexico in many natural parks of the Riviera Maya and also on Cozumel.
